And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed on the ground. He sleeps and rises night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows; he knows not how. (Mark 4:26-27)
In these verses Jesus gives us the key to understanding our roll in telling others about Jesus. We are the man who scatters the seed on the ground. The man only scatters the seed. He doesn’t make it sprout, nor does he make it grow, in fact he doesn’t even know how these things even happen. He only sees the fruit that comes from scattering the seed. In the same way our responsibility is to scatter the seed of God’s Word into the lives of those who we meet. It’s not our job to make that Word create faith in their hearts, that’s God’s job, that’s the work of the Holy Spirit. When we understand this reality we can be at rest knowing that as we faithfully spread the seed of God’s Word, God will save those whom he will. Our comfort is in knowing that it’s not our job to make anyone come to faith in Christ, we only need to scatter the seed.
