9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
As Jesus entered Jerusalem a week before his crucifixion, he did so riding on a colt. The crowds surrounded him shouting hosanna. This cry of praise was a declaration that salvation had come, that’s what hosanna had come to mean for those in Jesus day. They were praising God for the salvation they were hoping Jesus would bring as their conquering King, but Jesus did not conquer in the way that they had hoped. He didn’t take on the armies of Rome, not he defeated even greater enemies. He defeated our enemies. The enemies of Sin, Death and the Devil. So now we can declare as the crowds did “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
