When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3 And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
It was at this moment when the church of Jesus Christ was birthed. It did not come together through the ideas, or desires, or planning of men. It came into existence because of the promise of God, his Word (Acts 1:8) and the power of the Spirit. That’s how God continues to work in his church today. People respond to his in faith and become part of the body of Christ when the Word of God is properly proclaimed and the presence of the Holy Spirit makes that Word come alive in the hearts of men. The true church has always held to the sufficiency of the Scriptures and relied on the power of the Spirit to bring people to faith, because “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ.” When we trust in the means that God has provide his church to bring people to Christ, we will see people come to faith in him.
