18 Also many of those who were now believers came, confessing and divulging their practices. 19 And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted the value of them and found it came to fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20 So the word of the Lord continued to increase and prevail mightily.
There are many pastors today who are making the pulpit a place to preach life change. However most of this kind of preaching is no better than any self-help book you can find at the local Barnes and Nobel. But the apostles did not focus on life change, they preached the gospel – that is Christ and him crucified. It was that kind of preaching that created true life change. It is that change that comes from the realization of the magnitude of our sin and the greatness of our savior. As Paul preached the gospel, even to believers, they began to confess their sins, reveal their pagan practices and burned their books. They were experiencing true life change, not from preaching about life change, but by having their focus on the mercies of God. So then, set your minds on Christ because when we behold him we will become more like him.
