23 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.
We have all been given a vocation in this life, in fact we each have many vocations. We may have the vocation of husband or wife. We may have the vocation of parent or grandparent. We have been given a vocation by which we make a living. We have the vocation of serving in some way in the church where we worship. So then we all have multiple vocations or jobs that we’re responsible to fulfill on a daily basis. All of these things are the good works that God has given us to do, but the question is how well do we do those jobs. Paul here encourages us to labor in every responsibility we have as if we were working for The Lord Jesus Christ, that we are in his service, that he is our boss if you would. However, this attitude of seeing Christ as the one we are serving as we serve others is not to earn his pleasure, but it’s a response of gratitude for what he has done for us. We serve knowing that it is from The Lord we receive our inheritance. Notice it does not say we receive our wages, but our inheritance. An inheritance isn’t earned, but is a gift, so we work as one who loves the Lord because he first loved us and in responding to that love we serve wholeheartedly in our vocation no matter where God has put us.
