9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
All of humanity was plunged into the darkness of sin due to Adam’s rebellion. From that day everyone born into this world has been born unholy and ungodly, living lives of sinfulness and rebellion against God. It’s in that state that God has chosen to save some, calling out of a life of unholiness to a life of holiness. It is a holy calling, a calling to salvation and a life of holiness. But Paul makes it clear here that the reason God saves who he saves has nothing to do with us. It has nothing to do with our works, our goodness (because we have none), or anything found within us. No, he saved us because of his own purpose and grace. Scriptures make it clear that long before we even came on the scene God had already determined who he would save and he did so not because he looked down the corridor of time and saw faith in us, but because he looked down the corridor of time and said “I want to save that one.” This is the essence of grace which was given to us in Christ before the ages began. This is a glorious truth that should humble us and increase our love for our Savior even more. Hallelujah what a Savior.
