17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
How do we become more holy in this life? How do we treasure Christ more and more, day by day? How to we grow in our love towards God and loving service to our neighbors? How are we strengthened for and through the days of tribulation and trial? How do we fight against the sin in our lives that works to keep us in bondage? How do we gain hope for the return of Christ and the inheritance of eternal life we have in him? The answer to all of these questions is through the Word of God. Peter makes this clear in his second letter when he writes: “3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire.” Knowledge of God and awareness of his “very great promises” come to us through the revealed written Word of God and all of it works to sanctify us, that is make us holy, because all of it is truth. Truth that sets us free from the bondage of sin, truth that gives us strength for the day, truth that gives us hope of our eternal salvation, and truth that reveals the glory of Christ and sets before us a vision of him that causes us to treasure him more and more. Apart from the Word (and the work of the Holy Spirit) you are unable to make any progress in your faith in this life, so I beg of you, I plead with you, I implore you – read the Word!
