Devotional – John 21

25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.

Do you ever find it curious that Jesus never wrote down any of his teachings or recorded any of the miracles he did? Have you ever wondered why he didn’t have any of his disciples keep a daily journal of everything he did and said? I mean here is God walking among us one might think that everything he said and did would have value to our life and faith, and yet nothing was ever written during the days Jesus spent on this earth. In fact, the testimonies of the gospels were recorded for us at a much later time. But even they do not contain all the Jesus ever said or did. What they do contain is everything that God wanted us to know about Jesus, who he was and the work he did. All that John and the other gospel writers recorded for us through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit are sufficient for us to place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ our Savior. Though books could be filled that could cover the earth detailing every moment of Christ’s life, we have been given four brief sketches of the life and teaching of Jesus and in them is everything we need to know about those days Jesus spent on this earth. So when you read through the gospel narratives you don’t have to wish for more details, you can have full assurance that God has provided for you everything you need to know. The Scriptures are sufficient – trust them and trust the One who has given them to you, and trust the One to whom they point – Jesus Christ.
