Devotional – Revelation 2

Be faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death.’

Although we do not face the threat of death for our faith there are millions of Christians in this world who do, on a daily basis. There early church lived under the threat of death for the first three hundred years. That threat to Christians, even in this land will become more real as we draw nearer to the coming of the day of the Lord. The time to strengthen your resolve to be able to stand under the pressure of death and keep your faith in the Lord Jesus Christ is now. Modern armies do not wait to train for battle when war breaks out, no they are in constant training, particularly in times of peace, so when war does break out they will be ready. The time to build your resolve to stand firm in the faith when the threat of death comes is now. The goal in firming up your resolve now is the attaining of the crown of life, that is eternal life or as the second half of the verse puts it, that we might not face the second death. Therefore, to save ourselves from death in this life is to face the second death in the next, but to be willing to die for the Lord Jesus Christ in this life means freedom from the second death in the next life. How do we firm up our faith and resolve? We keep our eye on our Savior who faced death for us. He suffered and died for our sake demonstrating his love towards us, we also should be prepared to do the same in a loving response to his gift of eternal life. So look to the cross for your resolve and then find good books about the men and women who have gone before you in death who faced torture, beatings and finally death for their faith and hold them up as examples.
